IATA takes five important decisions during the 75th session of its General Assembly

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has called on the 75th session of its General Assembly held in the capital of South Korea, Seoul last Saturday and continued until 3 June for the implementation of the CORSIA scheme for International Air Carbon Offsetting and Reduction (CORSIA) as agreed through United Nations International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

CORSIA is the world´s first carbon pricing tool for the industry, aiming to limit carbon dioxide emissions resulting from international aviation at 2020 levels (carbon neutral growth or CNG).

The General Assembly stressed the need to commit to reducing net emissions to 2005 levels by 2050.

It also urged airlines to implement all fuel efficiency measures and fully participate in the long-term transformation of sustainable aviation fuel according to industry commitment 2050.

On the other hand, the Association reiterated the importance of a coordinated global system of SLOTs and called on Governments to address capacity shortages urgently. The resolution also reaffirmed that Worldwide Slot Guidelines is the global standard for policies, principles and procedures for the allocation and management of slots. In addition, the statement of objectives focused on providing consumer benefits, establishing appropriate timetables, ensuring transparency and non-discrimination in the process and using existing capacities to maximize their potential. The Ordinary General Assembly Meeting called for the implementation of modern messaging standards to ensure more efficient baggage tracking, accurate, in real time and at key points along the way.

This decision requires airlines to:

Switch to bar-coded luggage tags with RFID devices and use RFID data alerts to implement processes at airports and ground handling service providers in order to prevent possible routing errors.

AGM decided to accelerate the global implementation of the One ID project, which uses a unique biometric identifier for a passenger´s travel in at the airport, without the need for paper travel documents. The resolution of IATA on One ID asks stakeholders, airlines, airports and government authorities, to work together to promote and implement a paperless passenger process using biometric recognition.

With regard to disabled passengers, the General Assembly decided to improve the air travel experience for an estimated one billion persons with disabilities worldwide.

Airlines are committed to ensuring that passengers with disabilities have access to a safe, reliable and dignified flight while calling on governments to use IATA basic principles to accommodate travelers with disabilities. These principles aim to shift the focus from disability to accessibility and integration by bringing together the travel industry and governments to harmonize regulations and provide the clarity expected by travelers.
